A monitoring activity was conducted by the embedded personnel of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-CAR), Mountain Province on the Permanent Environment Protection Order (PEPO) issued by the court within the jurisdiction of Barangays Mainit and Maligcong of Bontoc, Mountain Province on March 9-10, 2021.
It was confirmed during the monitoring that adits and small-scale mining portals have been abandoned evidenced by wildlings covering the area. Moreover, small-scale miners’ camps located near the area have been converted as rice grain storage or shed by locals attending their nearby rice paddies.
This order mandates concerned Barangay Local Government Unit (BGU), Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU), Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) and agencies of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-CAR), Mines and Geosciences (MGB-CAR) and the Philippine National Police (PNP)/ Municipal Police Station (MPS) to monitor the PEPO areas to prevent any environmental threat to the subject areas.
This Permanent Environment Protection Order was issued at Farnek and Avo-os area both located within Barangay Mainit due to the Gold Rush and rampant illegal logging which took place in these areas before.
Only the court has the power to lift or amend the Permanent Environment Protection Order. Until then, the concerned Local Government Unit and agencies shall be monitoring these areas.
